Bitcoin District Takes Inititiative
Members of Washington, DC’s growing Bitcoin community are taking initiative to transform our Nation's Capital into a thriving Bitcoin circular economy.

From Community to Initiative
Over the past few years, DC has quietly become one of the most active Bitcoin hubs in the country. What began as small gatherings in coffee shops and walks on the National Mall has grown into a connected network of meetups, workshops, and book clubs.
Through the Bitcoin District community, people have built friendships, shared ideas, and explored how Bitcoin and freedom technology can strengthen local resilience and personal sovereignty.
Now that grassroots energy is being organized into a not-for-profit framework — one designed to help residents and local businesses understand what makes Bitcoin different and how they can use it to build a better future for themselves and their communities.
Guided by bitcoiners and rooted in open-source principles, the Initiative focuses on three pillars:
- Local Business Outreach: Helping merchants understand and accept Bitcoin, keeping value circulating locally and raising awareness among residents.
- Education: Hosting workshops, meetups, and producing educational resources about Bitcoin, self-custody, and privacy tools.
- Community Building: Partnering with local groups and organizations to expand Bitcoin education and practical adoption across the city.
A Vision for the Capital
Washington, DC belongs to everyone — a crossroads of ideas and ideals. It’s where decisions are made that reach far beyond the city itself. By showing that a thriving Bitcoin economy can take root here, we send a message to the world: Bitcoin adoption isn’t theoretical — it’s practical, empowering, and transformative.
Visitors arriving from around the world will find a city where they can spend sats freely, without complicated conversions or cashless restrictions. Bitcoin enables anyone, from any country, to engage in DC’s economy with ease.
DC also matters for another reason: when elected leaders see Bitcoin working in the very city where they serve, they carry that experience home. As small businesses, families, and neighborhoods thrive through Bitcoin adoption, those leaders witness economic freedom and personal sovereignty in action — not as theory, but as lived reality.
By building this movement in Washington, DC, we’re planting seeds that show how everyday people can use Bitcoin to take control of their money and strengthen their communities. It starts here and ripples outward to cities everywhere.
The Work Ahead: 100 Businesses Accepting Bitcoin by 2026
Our first major goal is clear: help 100 local businesses understand, accept, and hold Bitcoin by 2026.
We meet owners where they are — in their shops, at farmers markets, and along neighborhood main streets — to listen, answer questions, and build trust. Many are curious but overwhelmed by misinformation. We cut through the noise with a simple message: We teach Bitcoin — and only Bitcoin.
Here’s how we’re doing it:
- Meeting business owners directly at their place of work.
- Visiting farmers markets and vendor fairs to start real conversations.
- Conducting a Local Business Bitcoin Survey to build connections.
- Following up with hands-on education and tools.
- Teaching merchants to accept Bitcoin using accessible solutions like Square’s Bitcoin feature.
- Adding participating businesses to BTC Map and providing “Bitcoin Accepted Here” signs to help customers find them.

Every new business that joins brings DC one step closer to a truly living Bitcoin economy.
The Bitcoin District Initiative is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization — built by members of the community and funded by donations.
You can support the mission by:
- Donating fiat or Bitcoin to fund our outreach and education programs.
- Volunteering to help onboard merchants, teach workshops, or design educational materials.
- Joining the community at local meetups and events to connect, learn, and build a better DC, from the ground up.
Together, we can turn the District into a model for what a thriving Bitcoin city looks like — one business, one neighborhood, one block at a time.
